چکیده

The effect of mechanical loading on articular cartilage is the topic chosen for the second editorial of this newly launched journal. The aim of this interesting editorial is to illustrate the cell signaling correlated to the mechanical loading, some aspects of the mechanobiology and the positive and negative effects of the mechanical loading on articular cartilage. The benefits of the mechanical loading on articular cartilage have been shown to have a shortand long-term effectiveness. In this article, the role of mechanical signaling in the maintenance of articular cartilage and how the alterations in normal signaling can lead to joint pathology have been discussed.

The Effect of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Aqueous Extract of Elaeagnus Angustifolia on the Mechanical Properties of Articular Cartilage in an Experimental Model of Rat Osteoarthritis

Introduction: Although, the effect of direct intra-articular injection of bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) on the repair of articular cartilage and the effect of Elaeagnus angustifolia extract on pain relief in patients with osteoarthritis have been investigated, no studies has been conducted to compare the effects of these two therapeutic methods on the mechanical properties of articular cartila...

CD147 (Extracellular Matrix Metalloproteinase Inducer-EMMPRIN) Expression by Human Articular Chondrocytes

Background: Integrins are a family of transmembrane proteins that allow communication between the extracellular matrix and the interior of cells. Chondrocytes, cells of articular cartilage, express integrins and these molecules appear to have a variety of roles including mechanotransduction. Integrins are known to associate with a number of accessory molecules such as CD147 that may act to regu...

Depth-Dependent Anisotropy of the Micromechanical Properties of Porcine Articular Cartilage Measured via Atomic Force Microscopy

INTRODUCTION: Articular cartilage exhibits distinct differences in biochemical composition [1] and structure [2] of the extracellular matrix (ECM) with distance from the articular surface. These differences result in depth-dependent biomechanical properties [3, 4, 5] that can have a significant effect on the mechanical environment of the chondrocyte [6, 7]. An additional structural component of...

Biomechanical properties and mechanobiology of the articular chondrocyte.

To withstand physiological loading over a lifetime, human synovial joints are covered and protected by articular cartilage, a layer of low-friction, load-bearing tissue. The unique mechanical function of articular cartilage largely depends on the composition and structural integrity of the cartilage matrix. The matrix is produced by highly specialized resident cells called chondrocytes. Under p...

Effect of Collagen Viscoelasticity on the Mechanical Response of Articular Cartilage

INTRODUCTION Articular cartilage is known to exhibit strong transient mechanical behavior. When subjected to high strainrate loading, its apparent stiffness can be 10 times greater than its stiffness at equilibrium. However, the mechanism of this strain-rate dependent response is not completely understood. While some studies have shown evidence of a fluid-flow dominant mechanism of the strain-r...
